Beyond the Image: Photography Exhibition

Vancouver, BC – Since the camera obscura in historic times, the intrigue and wonder of capturing images was initiated. The perspective of this early form of the camera was accurate and indeed fascinating. Then in 1727, a professor stumbled across the first photo-sensitive compound by mixing nitric acid, chalk and silver in a flask. And by 1834, the father of photography Henry Fox Talbot creates the first positive image. During days with his family on the shores of Italy, his invention was sparked by frustration of nothing more than his lack of drawing talent. He says: “the idea occurred to me... how charming it would be if it were possible to cause these natural images to imprint themselves durably, and remain fixed upon the paper." And thus the birth of photography.

It wasn’t until late 2001 when Art Works Gallery introduced its first photographer to the gallery collection, Clay Davidson. Globally, within the last few years, the interest in photography has piqued, arguably some would say with the onset of digital imaging. While others would argue that digital imaging fails to capture the true essence of photography, it undoubtedly has expanded the capacity of creating images beyond our own realistic realm.

Whatever your perspective, please join us for Beyond the Image, Photography Exhibition, for your chance to view the unique perspectives of nine local photographers.

David Crocker
Initially an abstract painter, David prefers ‘painting with light’ and has been photographing for almost a decade. He never bores of the intrigue he finds in the textures, patterns and colours in his everyday world. He is an award winning Canadian artist living in Vancouver.

Clay Davidson
He prefers black and white images to communicate the mood, spirit and clarity of his subject. His work is shown in galleries in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, as well as internationally and is the recipient of an international award based on his explorations in the Canadian Westcoast rainforest.

June Hunter
The images she produces begin life as photographs taken in her own garden with a simple, manual 35mm camera, hand held and using only natural light. June has been recognized in various media, for her unique concept.

Nansi Lynn Kivisto
Architecture and the raw beauty of nature inspire Nansi, she frequently experiments with the creative process by manipulating photographic images creating impressive double exposures and images. Nansi always explores new photographic techniques.

Ken Pederson
Through Freighter Art, Ken strived to aesthetically portray the diverse array of shapes, colours and distinct industrial beauty of these hulking carriers while at peaceful anchor in Vancouver.

Joaquin Pedrero
Using simple, but masterful, in-camera techniques and printing all of his photographs by hand, Pedrero creates photographic composites which melt the model and the set into one another, expressing a private vision of surreal reality.

Adrian Zator
Adrian’s photography is the expression of his wanderings. By overlapping images from various elements in his environment, he is able to challenge his viewer to look at the world with a new perspective.

Zohar
For Zohar, photography is essentially an inner art, an intimate questioning of our perception. Parameters such as aperture, sensitivity, exposure, focus, depth of field – take on renewed life.

Hemingway
Brian enjoys capturing images in the outside world. His work can be seen throughout a variety of galleries and arts and craft venues and was once a juried artisan at Granville Island public market in Vancouver.
