Deryk Houston
“Movement, Miracles & Memories” (March 6th
– April 8th, 2006)
This March Deryk Houston exhibits his latest work titled
“Movement, Miracles & Memories”.
Houston’s wide range of work demonstrates how the arts provide ways for us to understand each other as human beings. His art focuses on life cycles, fertile ground and community. Deryk recently returned from the Ted Harrison artist’s retreat log cabin in the Yukon. His artistic energy was completely revitalized and his new collection of vibrant landscape paintings reflect that.
“The core of my work and the reason for painting has never changed. I am fascinated by our place in this world as individuals, especially in the context of the land. I grew up on a farm and I have many memories that influence my work fifty years later. The crows or blackbirds, used to frighten the hell out of me as a child. I watched them peck the eyes out of the sheep. But at the same time they were beautiful. Shadows are balanced by light every time. I once asked God that if he truly existed.... then prove it to me by showing me a miracle. My daughter was born not long after that. Many of my paintings have tulips or roses scattered around. I love playing with the changing patterns, the rhythms of the stems and the shapes of the buds. It gives me endless possibilities for colour and design. The process of painting, repeat patterns is a purely abstract experience for me. Only after they are completed do I see the surface as a complete image. Purely coincidental to me actually. Movement plays a big role in my work. I try to express my joy for life through the use of swift brushstrokes and pure, but careful choice of colours in my paintings. I want my work to look fertile. Simple things.”
