Art Works Gallery presents an impressive new collection of work by gallery artists in an exhibit titled “BRILLIANT PALETTES”.
New gallery artist Cheryl Fortier describes her appeal to depicting nature: “The ephemeral beauty of the landscape and the lingering presence of the garden draw me from the sheer physicality of the world to the possibility of its transformation through art. I now spend the greater part of my life in an urban environment, where I pass my time longing to be in and subsequently trying to evoke a ‘sense’ of the places in nature that have stirred me. The kind of ‘sense’ that I want to summon is both physical, in that the paintings recall the actual places I have been, and more importantly, it is emotive, evoking a deeper resonance with the sensations of calm I experience in nature’s presence.”
Arthur Potts comments: “My paintings utilize abstraction as a method and landscape experience as a source. I use the technique of abstract expressionism and the frisson of colour and texture to create my work. Painting is a process of recovering our first idea. Memory is invariably accompanied by feeling.” His work follows in the tradition of post war European artists and American abstract expressionist painters. Creative influences include Patrick Heron, Nicholas de Stael, Peter Lanyon, Willem de Kooning and Richard Diebenkorn. Extensive travel in Europe, including several painting and sketching sojourns continually inspire his work, especially the light, color and atmosphere of Andalucia and Provence.
As a painter of landscape, Vern Simpson observes nature with great care and accuracy. As a Gulf Island resident, he has witnessed a year of extremes “from extreme drought, which ended abruptly with record rainfall in two days, with plants that seemed dead within a few weeks were lush and green.” Simpson’s most recent work echoes this natural cycle of the land, or as the artist states: ”The paintings are a metaphor, growing in an abstracted, textural, layered manner that pays homage to nature and hopefully acts as a conduit to reintroduce the world outside the concrete suburbs.”
Other artist’s exhibiting in the show are Claude Rousseau, Deryk Houston, Joyce Kamikura, Marc Robert North, June Hunter, Laurel Cormack, Robert Florian, and others
