“Outside The Lines” (November 14^th – December 24^th)

If you attended the show Robert Florian had at Artworks two years ago, you might have noticed slight changes in his style of painting since then. His work in this years show titled “Outside the Lines” incorporates a fresh new approach to the way Robert depicts our Western Canadian landscapes. Previously, he began by simplifying the shapes in the image he had chosen to paint and then would start by laying down colour within those shapes.  Although this approach proved effective in the final completed work, it still seemed (in his eyes) to lack the spontaneous overall feeling that Robert strived to achieve.

In his newer compositions Robert finds he can get more gratification from his work by first starting with a very fast and free acrylic under painting using a two-inch house brush.  This gives him the spontaneous edge he has been seeking and allows him to capture the feeling of the scene with greater ease and freedom.  He follows this with a layer of oil paint that gives a richer more luminescent quality to the finished piece. In some instances, areas of the acrylic under painting remain visible in certain parts of the work which only serve to add more interest to the final piece.

Florian’s depictions of the wild and rugged west coast landscape still hold their strong qualities in both light and composition, but now also carry a lively unrestricted feeling. He also has a greater interest in taking a closer look at the abstract qualities that the land holds. Whether it’s a tangle of leaves and Forrest undergrowth or the reflections created in a small section of water, these images allow Robert to experiment with the act of painting outside the lines.
