Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare,
And left the flushed print in a poppy there.
~Francis Thompson, "The Poppy," 1891
Wherever flowers blossom Margaret Devenyi is there to capture their beauty. Since her first solo exhibition in 1970, her work conveys the temperament of the South of France and recreates the energy she experiences in her journeys. Her latest work will be exhibited in her 23rd solo show, aptly titled ‘Bloom’ at Art Works Gallery.
Devenyi’s earliest artistic training began in Hungary under the tutelage of internationally known artist Jeno Benedek. She also studied at the University of Natural Sciences in Budapest. Devenyi left her native Hungary in 1957 and moved to British Columbia, Canada to continue her career as a ‘budding’ (pun intended) artist.
Devenyi's paintings reflect an intense and immediate response to the landscape. She developed a unique style with nature as a central theme, recreating the intensity of the original experience. Her images are painted with loose and vigorous brushstrokes, and characterized by boldness of colour and dynamism of composition. She creates vivid landscapes of fields bursting with flowers which she explains have ”a vast and powerful effect, yet [they are] made up of individual flowers each different from the other”. Not unlike the show itself. Each painting more inviting than the last makes up an exhibit that simply hums with vibrancy.
‘Bloom’ is on exhibit from March 23rd – May 3rd
